APS - ADULT PICTURE STOCK
CONTRIBUTORS Frequently Asked Questions
Back to Contributor List

Are passwords issued automatically?
The application for a password to view exclusive and semi-exclusive picture sets is not an automated process. All applications are checked and the information provided is followed through to ensure the applicant details are that of a genuine buyer for print publication.

Can anyone get a password to view the exclusive picture sets?
No. To maintain the exclusivity of the APS stock we only issue passwords to editors and picture publishers who we are confirmed as genuine buyers for print publication. This arrangement gives publishers the confidence to view and purchase from APS in the knowledge that only they and their competitors are able to view the material available for purchase. Likewise, it gives the photographers contributing sets the confidence in knowing that their sets are only being viewed by editors and picture publishers.

What is an exclusive set and can I use any pictures for other uses?
Contributing photographers are required to confirm that each set submitted to the exclusive category has not been published in any format including print and on line. Photographers are permitted to use up to three pictures from each set as low resolutions of their work for self promotion purposes.

What sort of material can I expect to sell through APS?
Any material you would find in a UK licensed sex shop or within UK top shelf magazines. Including but not limited to:
Solo nude including open genitals, masturbation, use of sex toys (vaginal or anal), peeing and bondage.
Boy/Girl/Girl/Girl and group sex including but not limited to intercourse, oral sex, ejaculation, anal sex, double penetration, sex toys, bondage and fetish.

What material is NOT accepted for sale through APS?
Material deemed to be illegal within the UK including but not limited to under age material (with participants under the age of 18 years of age), sex acts between humans and animals, material depicting torture, rape or death (other than mild spanking and bondage). APS will immediately contact the relevant authorities if we are supplied or asked to supply any child pornography. Currently, we do not accept gay material as we do not have the sales contact to distribute to.

What sort of prices are the exclusive sets sold for?
The prices of exclusive sets, which APS set, range from £50 to £1,000 ex vat and beyond if good enough. Really the price depends upon the quality, the content, the model(s) used, the location, the style and which particular publication the set is aimed at.
Its difficult to draw direct comparisons between individual stock photos and exclusive adult sets. Exclusive sets to magazine editors can sell for as little as £50 for a ten picture set shot in a readers wife style up to £1000 and above for a high quality hardcore set shot in a quality location with fresh young unpublished talent.
A typical high circulation UK top shelf magazine set of 150 images often sells for around £350 to £400 but they often want other material stronger than the magazine normally publishes. The additional material will be for placement on its subscription web site and for publication in affiliated hardcore magazines only available via licensed sex shops.

What happens when my exclusive set is sold
The magazine will purchase the exclusive picture set with a one year exclusive use licence after which time the set will be moved to the semi-exclusive section. When the semi-exclusive set is sold and the one year semi-exclusive licence expires the picture sets may be split by APS if too large and sold on the non-exclusive section of the site.

What is a semi-exclusive set?
Typically a semi exclusive set will have been published once on a subscription web site. By supplying it for sale via APS the photographer / copyright holder has agreed not to sell the set elsewhere. Semi exclusive sets sold through APS are sold with the same twelve month multiple use license as the exclusive sets. After this period the set will be moved to the non-exclusive section.

What does it cost me to submit picture sets?
APS does not charge contributors to submit picture sets.

What commission does APS take from sales?
APS charges a commission of 45% so the photographer receives 55% of the sales price. There are no up front fees and no hidden costs to contributors.

How does APS justify a 45% commission?
In recent years a variety of different payment structures has arisen in mainstream stock libraries and traditionally stock libraries pay 50% of proceeds to the photographer / copyright holder. Some charge placement / membership fees.

As of January 2008 the typical mainstream rates for non adult material sold via stock libraries are:
Istockphoto pay 20% rising to 40% if you qualify for their exclusivity status. But they can price individual pictures as low as$1 each.
Picturenation pay “up to” 40% commission.
Society of wedding and portrait photographers pays charges of 25% commission but you also have up front membership costs and there are qualification requirements.
Getty Images charge a placement fee of $50 per image or $250 for the first 10 images. Commission rates to photographers vary depending upon the style and sales route that ranges from 25% up to 60%.
Alamy charges a commission and rates vary from 35% up to 55% so the photographer receives from 45% up to 65% depending on the Alamy sales outlet.

Would I not be better just submitting my picture sets direct to the magazines?
All picture sets submitted to APS are quality checked before being added to the site and pictures within a set that don't meet the standard are not included. This means editors and picture buyers are looking at the site knowing the pictures are of a high standard. APS gives all photographers a chance not just the well known ones because the picture buyers see the picture content without knowing who the photographer is. Additionally, the need to insert and trawl through loads of CDs submitted looking for picture sets to publish that contain images that don't meet their standard is eliminated.
Editors are aware that all sets are 100% quality checked before adding to the site and those who express an interest in a particular style of material will be notified immediately the set is uploaded.

Can I produce my pictures sets from a 'Mac' computer?
Not at the moment because APS doesn't use them.

How will I know that APS will be able to see the contents put on my CD or DVD?
Once everything is copied to CD or DVD test it in another computer. If the second computer can see the contents of the CD or DVD the chances are the computers at APS will also be able to see them.

Where do I send my picture sets to?
Picture sets should be sent to PO BOX NO 396 Hounslow TW5 0XT
If you wish they can be sent by first class post or by 'recorded', 'special delivery' or similar.

How do I fill in the 'Submission Sheet'?
Include your name, address and telephone number on each sheet submitted.
Your 'Contributor Number' is the number we supply after completing the Contributor Application Form. Remember to write it on the CD or DVD along with your 'Contributor Set Number'
CONTRIBUTOR SET NUMBER:
This is the number you give the set so should any queries arise prior to the set being placed on the web site both the contributor and APS know which set is being referred to. The numbers can start at one (1) and incriment by the number of sets supplied. It's not advisable to start each sheet with the number one (1) but continue incrementing for each set supplied to avoid duplication.
APS SET NUMBER:
Once accepted by APS the picture set is given a unique number that becomes part of the code on the APS web site. This number will be emailed to you for inclusion on your copy of the submission sheet so both parties can track the picture set once included on the APS web site.
NUMBER OF PICTURES IN THE SET:
Enter the number of pictures in the picture set.
TYPE - RAW, TIF, JPG OR BOTH:
Include the type of images supplied in that picture set so APS know if they are RAW, JPG or BOTH.
EXCLUSIVE, SEMI-EXCLUSIVE OR NON-EXCLUSIVE:
Enter exclusive, semi-exclusive or non-exclusive according to where the picture set is to be located on the APS web site.
SUGGESTED TITLE FOR THE PICTURE SET:
To help APS market and sell your picture set please provide a suggestion of the title you think best suits your picture set.
MODEL'S PREFERRED NAME FOR PUBLICATION:
Some models don't use their real name in publications so let us know the name they prefer to use with the picture set.
MODEL'S LEGAL NAME:
The model's real or 'legal' name.

Once completed sign and date the 'Submission Sheet'.
Send the original 'Submission Sheet' to APS with your CD(s) or DVD(s) with hard copies of model releases, proof of age, proof of identities and in the case of non-exclusive sets a list of approximately 30 keywords buyers are likely to search the set for.
Keep a copy for your records and to insert the APS set number when provided.

What do I use to write my 'Contributor Number' and my 'Contributor Set Number' on the CD or DVD?
Use a CD / DVD marker pen.

How many picture sets do I put on one CD or DVD?
Only one picture set per CD or DVD is allowed. Multiple sets sent in on the same CD or DVD will be returned with a request to split them onto separate discs thus slowing down the process of including the sets on the site.

What else do I send with the picture sets?
Send your CD or DVD's with the 'Submission Sheet' duly completed (remember to include your contributor set number on the CD or DVD as well as on the 'Submission Sheet'. Include hard copies of the model release for all principle participants together with proof of identity, proof of age(s) relating to the set and approximately 30 keywords that buyers can use to search for your set.
NOTE: If more than one picture set is being submitted at a time ensure the hard copy paperwork is attached to or inserted with the appropriate CD or DVD so as to avoid confusion.

Do I need to supply approximately 30 keywords for the exclusive and semi-exclusive sets?
No, but please send us a short paragraph that we can include with the set on the site explaining what the set is about as this will help the search facility and also give the editors and publishers an understanding of what the set is about.
The 30 keywords are required for the non-exclusive section but if you want to send them in at the time of submitting the exclusive and semi-exclusive sets in readiness for the sets going non-exclusive you may.
